Protecting pregnant workers and new mothers - Guidance for employers

Returning to work for a breastfeeding mother doesn't mean that it's time to stop feeding. Before returning to work, breastfeeding women should give their employers written notification that she's breastfeeding and the employer should then conduct a specific risk assessment. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends that it's good practice for employers to provide a private, healthy and safe environment for breastfeeding mothers to express and store milk. The toilets are not a suitable place to express breast milk. Employees who are breastfeeding are also entitled to more frequent rest breaks, with the timing and frequency of any breaks agreed mutually between employer and employee.
